What Makes a Christian School?

The above question was asked by a friend who was visiting Bundy Canyon Christian School (BCCS). I have been in the Christian School ministry for over 40 years, and I can never remember anyone asking me that question.

I thought for a few seconds and then replied, “Teachers.” My friend answered, “No, there are thousands of teachers who are Christians who teach in the ‘government’ public schools. Those schools are not Christian.” You know, he was right. Teachers who are Christian do not make a school Christian.

Is it the students who make it Christian? Same conclusion – thousands upon thousands of students in the government public schools are Christian, but that does not make them Christian schools.

What then makes it Christian? Maybe because a lot of schools that are Christian are located in Christian church buildings. If that were true, then going into a horse barn would make you a horse. Maybe it is a chapel service once a week or Bible classes.

If it is not the teachers, or the students, or the church buildings, then what is it?

All at once it was clear! It is the curriculum. For a school to be Christian, it must use a God-centered Christian curriculum, plus Christian teachers who teach the God-centered curriculum, and in buildings set apart to honor God.

When looking for a “Christian school,” always ask the all-important question: “Do you use God-centered Christian curriculum in your Christian school?” If the answer is no, then I would search out schools that use 100% God-centered curriculum.

BCCS uses the ABeka Curriculum for all classes: Preschool thru 8th grade. Their website is www.abeka.com if you would like more information.
